Military Transition - Vet Centers

Tags:

Local Vet Centers are often overlooked in our communities. There's normally a local Veteran Center available to work with military veterans who have experienced a trauma while serving in the military.

In some cases, counseling is available to family members of people who have served in combat. Please contact your local Vet Center if experiencing PTSD or other trauma related issues. You aren't alone and there are services available to assist you.

Below is a link to the Vet Center Directory. Veterans In Motion realizes coaching may not always be the solution and we would like to ensure that all active duty military and military veterans are aware of their resources.

We concluded our "Behavior Flexibility Game" series in our weekly Military Transition newsletter this evening. I'd like to thank the 34 newsletter subscribers for accepting our previous newsletters. I'd also like to thank the 11 RSS subscribers who receive daily updates to our Military Transition RSS Feed.

To receive next week's newsletter, go to www.veteransinmotion.com and receive our free chapter to our latest book and to be subscribed to our weekly newsletter. Next week, we will begin previewing "The Five Mistakes Military People Make While Leaving The Military, 5 Crucial Steps To Avoid Them" which is our latest book and can be purchased at www.veteransinmotion.com .

Food For Thought:

It's quite amazing to observe former military people adjusting to civilian life. My heart goes out to them and I fully understand some of the situations they find themselves experiencing. I'd like to share a few common mistakes we make as military people in the civilian sector.

Note: We often have unrealistic expectations of others.

How do you think a military person can have unrealistic expectations of another? Let me share a true account of a former military person in the civilian work force. Before I do, realize it may take several years for a person to fully transition out of the military. This is one factor to consider. Here is a true account that occurred and keep in mind this is mentioned in humor. We have to be able to laugh at ourselves.

Lets say Johnny just started his first civilian job after the military. He noticed that most of the men at his job have crooked gig lines and their shoes aren't shined.

What possibilities can happen with this scenario?

1. Johnny walks up to the his civilian counterparts and inform them that their gig lines aren't straight. Next, he thoroughly indicates that they should shine their shoes.

2. Johnny realizes he has to accept others for their differences.

What impact will Johnny's behavior have in number 1 (remember he is just a co-worker, not a boss)? The result can be total alienation. Do you really think most civilians know what a gig line is? :o) (Humor)

When we leave the military we have to learn how to accept others for their differences. This will be very hard for some yet it's attainable. How will you be in the civilian sector?

This is just food for thought.

Military Transition - Veterans and Active Duty Military

Tags:

We’re almost at a close to our series for our inner game to a military transition. Let me share some information with you.

1. We currently have thousands of military people serving in Iraq.
2. Many people serving in Iraq may not realized how much the
Civilian Sector has changed since they have been in the military.
3. Leaving the military is a significant life change.
4. Many people leaving the military are enrolling in college upon discharge to enhance their skills for the civilian sector. (I interview or meet them in the college setting daily).
5. We are unaware of our opportunities while leaving the military.
6. Some of us don’t understand why employers aren’t breaking down the door to hire us after the military.
7. No one ever explains that many of us have to build a resume after leaving the military to get to where we want to be with our ideal job.
8. We don’t understand why we have to thoroughly access ourselves after the military.
9. How can we as military people find the jobs that correlate with our military occupation?
10. Are we considering all of the opportunities available to us when leaving the military?

The above facts and questions are feedback I hear from our veterans. Our veterans are more vocal regarding their military transition than someone still serving in the military. This is because a military veteran has experienced pitfalls with their military transition and a person leaving the military has not encountered changing their environments. When we are still in the military, it’s very difficult to see how things may pan out for us.

Many of us will get a job right after the military. Some of us will struggle and eventually have a job to support our lifestyles. Few of us will have an extremely hard time adjusting to the civilian sector and may result in homelessness. Check any Veteran Center for your local veteran homeless statistics.

This is a true fact. Many people aren’t prepared to leave the military and face life changes that they aren’t prepared to deal with while military transitioning. There’s no true manual or technical order to state what a person should do step by step when they leave the military.

There are many books on the market that explains how to get a job, yet many fail at addressing what is going on in the military person’s mind while their leaving the military.

If there is one thing I’d like for you to consider, it’ this, there are coaching solutions to assist people leaving the military. Veterans In Motion is committed to addressing the inner battles and victories a person encounters while leaving the military.

For a complimentary, no-obligation coaching session, contact us at Vetsinmotion@aol.com with your time zone, email address, and a good time to set up a coaching session. If you are deployed, email coaching arrangements are available.

Thanks for signing up for our newsletter.

If there is a particular subject you’d like addressed
in our newsletter, feel free to drop us a line at:
Vetsinmotion@aol.com. Let us know your thoughts.

Empower yourself through awareness of your
surroundings.

How did you do last week on finding positive
behaviors?

We often have to make decisions that
take us out of our comfort zone. Leaving the
military may be one of those decisions you’re
unsure about. One thing is for sure, you have made
an empowering decision to take control of your future.
Your mindset will frequently change as you work
in the civilian workforce. You will see many of the
behaviors in this series on your new job.

Last week, we addressed the below behaviors:

1. Lack of human relationship skills
2. Limited experience and knowledge of
managerial skills
3. All knowing attitude/Narcissistic
4. Unwillingness to learn new things

Remember the below crucial tips:
We are well into the series and now you may
want to start asking yourself if you are displaying
any of the behaviors we’ve addressed. Remember,
your military transition is an internal process and it’s
better to be in tune with what’s going on inside of you.
Identify what is in alignment with your goals, values,
principles, and beliefs. Next, ensure your environment
is in alignment with what’s important to you in life. This
will determine if you will stay with a job in the civilian
sector. If a job violates your goals, values, principles,
and beliefs, it will be up to you if you will stay with
the job or move on. You will have a choice where
you will work and who you will work for once you’re
out of the military. Use your freedom of choice
and work in an environment in alignment with your inner
values and beliefs when you leave the military.

The objective of last week’s exercise was to formulate
positive, opposite behaviors. You may have formulated
several opposite behaviors in the exercise. Below is
an example of positive behaviors you may have
formulated.

1. Empathy for others/Listening & Communicative Skills
2. Highly skilled leader/motivator/willingness to learn
3. Humble/Modest/Acceptance of others
4. Flexibility/Willingness to self improve

In every given moment of our lives, we have choices.
If you every find yourself in the first list, you have the
option to decide if you want to express a behavior in
list number 2. You may see someone in your immediate
environment express a behavior in list number 1. While
you see this person express an undesirable behavior,
always mentally formulate its positive opposite. This will keep
you in tune with your inner dialogue and your personal flexibility.

This week’s assignment is to find the opposite behaviors
for this week’s unfavorable behaviors. Start a journal
and write down different events that illustrate the behaviors
mentioned in this series.

The final exercise to this series will be to analyze all
of the behaviors in the series and determine your
ideal climate in your future civilian work environment.

This week’s exercise:

Lets analyze the below list of behaviors for this week
and formulate its positive opposites.

1. Unimaginative
2. Hostility
3. Mediocrity
4. Underachiever

Remember to think of the opposite behaviors from the
ones listed above.

The name of this exercise is “The Behavior Flexibility Game”.
This one little exercise will provide you with alternative choices
in your behavior.

Leaving the military is a significant
life change and your mental flexibility will be the
key to your transition. The objective is to develop a
positive mental dialogue and the possible positive
behavior in each circumstance.

This series is an inner game and will prepare
you for your military transition.

Military Transition Blog - Mindsets

Tags:

As you leave the military, you're probably wondering how you will earn an income in the civilian sector. You may see yourself as an employee, a self employed professional, an investor, or a business owner. You may imagine yourself as more than one of the above.

Over the next month, Veterans In Motion will be addressing various mindsets we have regarding money, careers, and personal values.

A year prior to leaving the military, I saw a show with the infamous Robert Kiyosaki discussing how we have various mindsets regarding money. Many people may not realize that Robert Kiyosaki was a U.S. Marine pilot and endured ups and downs after leaving the military. He's now one of the most successful entrepreneurs this country has ever known. That's why I've chosen him and as one of my most adored role models. He's one of us, a military veteran.

Below are the key books and materials that shifted my beliefs regarding money. Take a look, click on the below images, and use them with your military transition. These tools are valuable.

Qué les enseñan los ricos a sus hijos, que la clase media y pobre no. (Spanish)

What the rich teach their kids about money that the poor and middle class do not. Learn how to have your money work for you and why you don't need to earn a high income to be rich.

This takes you to the Audio Books category at the Rich Dad store.

Best Wishes With Your Military Transition.
