Empower yourself through awareness of your
surroundings.
How did you do last week on finding positive
behaviors?
We often have to make decisions that
take us out of our comfort zone. Leaving the
military may be one of those decisions you’re
unsure about. One thing is for sure, you have made
an empowering decision to take control of your future.
Your mindset will frequently change as you work
in the civilian workforce. You will see many of the
behaviors in this series on your new job.
Last week, we addressed the below behaviors:
1. Lack of human relationship skills
2. Limited experience and knowledge of
managerial skills
3. All knowing attitude/Narcissistic
4. Unwillingness to learn new things
Remember the below crucial tips:
We are well into the series and now you may
want to start asking yourself if you are displaying
any of the behaviors we’ve addressed. Remember,
your military transition is an internal process and it’s
better to be in tune with what’s going on inside of you.
Identify what is in alignment with your goals, values,
principles, and beliefs. Next, ensure your environment
is in alignment with what’s important to you in life. This
will determine if you will stay with a job in the civilian
sector. If a job violates your goals, values, principles,
and beliefs, it will be up to you if you will stay with
the job or move on. You will have a choice where
you will work and who you will work for once you’re
out of the military. Use your freedom of choice
and work in an environment in alignment with your inner
values and beliefs when you leave the military.
The objective of last week’s exercise was to formulate
positive, opposite behaviors. You may have formulated
several opposite behaviors in the exercise. Below is
an example of positive behaviors you may have
formulated.
1. Empathy for others/Listening & Communicative Skills
2. Highly skilled leader/motivator/willingness to learn
3. Humble/Modest/Acceptance of others
4. Flexibility/Willingness to self improve
In every given moment of our lives, we have choices.
If you every find yourself in the first list, you have the
option to decide if you want to express a behavior in
list number 2. You may see someone in your immediate
environment express a behavior in list number 1. While
you see this person express an undesirable behavior,
always mentally formulate its positive opposite. This will keep
you in tune with your inner dialogue and your personal flexibility.
This week’s assignment is to find the opposite behaviors
for this week’s unfavorable behaviors. Start a journal
and write down different events that illustrate the behaviors
mentioned in this series.
The final exercise to this series will be to analyze all
of the behaviors in the series and determine your
ideal climate in your future civilian work environment.
This week’s exercise:
Lets analyze the below list of behaviors for this week
and formulate its positive opposites.
1. Unimaginative
2. Hostility
3. Mediocrity
4. Underachiever
Remember to think of the opposite behaviors from the
ones listed above.
The name of this exercise is “The Behavior Flexibility Game”.
This one little exercise will provide you with alternative choices
in your behavior.
Leaving the military is a significant
life change and your mental flexibility will be the
key to your transition. The objective is to develop a
positive mental dialogue and the possible positive
behavior in each circumstance.
This series is an inner game and will prepare
you for your military transition.
