There's a new book on the horizon. The book is a recap on my experiences while leaving the military and what lead me to join the armed forces in 1981. The book shows a circle of events in my life and how one event can lead to another event. It's truly amazing how a startling past event can provide the solutions for a future event.
It was challenging leaving a career that started over 22 years ago. My mother realized she could relate to my new book. The book captured the anxiety and anguish a person experiences after retirement or any career transition. The key point of the book is how there are solutions available during stressful and trying moments. It all starts with our thinking and how we view ourselves.
My loving mother recently retired after 35 years service with a California school district. To my amazement, my mother experienced some of the same internal adjustments when she left her career. The previous e-book, "Five Mistakes People Make While Leaving The Military" also was a book she could relate to with her experiences. My father is a retired police officer and he mentioned that many of the transitions he experienced were mentioned in my first book.
After listening to recent reviews of the first book, I realized we create a bubble around ourselves, based on the people we are around, the books we read, and the things we let in our lives. Often when we are facing a transition, we limit our experiences if we are unable to venture out of our safe bubbles.
To give an example of our bubbles, we often mistake our work-related roles with our self-identity. Unfortunately, this fallacy isn't limited to military members. Teachers, policemen, clerks, hospitality workers, people in sales, and all walks of life carry their work-related roles in their private lives.
Stay tuned for the new book. Brace yourself for how a person feels when they see the front gate of their base for the last time or when they are facing a career transition. It's a heart breaking and empowering experience.
